Kids' Birthday Party Treats: 8 Delicious Ideas
Children’s birthday refreshments more often lack convenience than recipes. The dish looks nice, but you cannot eat it with one hand, the drink spills, the dessert melts, and every mum asks: “What is inside this?” You do not need a long menu. A few filling bites, one healthier choice, something sweet, simple drinks and dishes that match the theme are enough. Below are eight ideas that are easy to adapt for a home celebration, a kindergarten or a school group.
1. Snacks in themed containers
Snacks are more appealing when a child can pick them up alone, without a knife or fork. Cheese cubes, crackers, cucumber slices or grapes fit well into small containers matched to the party theme. For a mermaid party choose sea colours, for dinosaurs green and brown shades, for princesses pastel ones.
For younger children it is safer to offer soft, easy-to-chew food. Cut grapes lengthwise for the smallest ones, and do not put nuts on a shared table. If guests come from different families, mark the main ingredients on the containers.
Why separate containers are worth it
Separate containers let you keep sweet, savoury and neutral snacks apart and make allergy control easier. For example, snack containers “Dinosaurs” or dessert containers “Unicorn” are disposable, so there is nothing to wash up after the party. You will find more themes in the snack containers category.
Put the food out a few minutes before the guests arrive so the cheese does not dry out and the crackers stay crisp.

2. Mini pizzas and pancakes
When you need a more filling food, mini pizzas and pancakes work better than large sandwiches. A child takes one portion in hand, and it is easier for you to plan different flavours. Pizzas can be baked with cheese, vegetables or a mild sauce, and pancakes shaped with star or flower moulds.
Preparation and portions
Bake the mini pizzas in advance and warm them briefly before serving. Keep the pancakes covered so they do not dry out.
- Different flavours: mark them with small cards showing where the meat is and where the vegetables are.
- Ingredients: check for wheat, milk and eggs, especially if the treats are for a group.
- Serving: small trays from which the child can take something without reaching across other dishes.
- Topping up: do not put everything out at once; keep part covered in the kitchen.
3. Smoothies and drinks with straws
The drinks table does not have to be limited to sweet juices. Fruit smoothies add colour, and clear cups let the theme show through the drink itself. For a princess party a pink strawberry and apple smoothie suits, for a space party a purple berry one.
If the smoothie contains yoghurt or milk, label it. For a child who avoids dairy products, prepare a separate version in another jug.
What to prepare in advance
Mix the smoothie before the party and keep it in the fridge. Stir before pouring, and fill the cups only when serving. Paper straws “Summer colours” are 19.5 cm long, comfortable even for small children. Always keep water on the side: it remains the most practical choice when children are moving around a lot.
Pour in smaller amounts and top up later. There is less spillage, and the drink stays cold.

4. Vegetable sticks with dip
A vegetable tray works well when the vegetables are cut into comfortable bite-sized pieces and the dip is served separately. Carrots, peppers, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes add colour. Children often find it easier to try vegetables when a mild yoghurt dip is next to them.
Wash and dry the vegetables and cut them without sharp corners. Keep the dip chilled until serving and put out only as much as will be eaten in the near future. You will need more napkins than you think: the dip quickly ends up on hands.
5. Cupcakes and sweet bites
A large cake is not necessary for the sweets table. Cupcakes and small desserts let each child take one portion, so there is no need to cut anything. For a princess theme pink icing suits, for dinosaurs green accents, for space dark blue with little stars.
Decorate the cupcakes only when they are completely cool, because warm sponge melts the icing. Keep desserts with cream or curd in the fridge and take them out just before serving.
The dessert table
Dessert stand “Space” can become the centre of the sweets table. Place some of the cupcakes on it, keep the rest covered and top up as needed. The cupcakes or cake will be finished with cake decoration picks “Space” and birthday cake candles.
Check desserts for wheat, eggs, milk and nuts. Information on allergies in food for children has been prepared for parents by Kaunas Clinics.

6. Warm macaroni and cheese
On a cold day children prefer warm and familiar food. Macaroni and cheese, or a thick macaroni soup, becomes a filling base, especially when guests stay longer. Small portions in cups are more convenient than large plates.
Cook with a mild cheese and short pasta that is easy to eat with a spoon. Do not put very hot food on the table: check the temperature before serving.
7. Fruit and seed bites
Small bites made from dried fruit and seeds suit when you want something sweet, but not just sugar. They can be shaped into balls, served in coloured paper cases and matched to the party colours.
Do not put nuts on the shared children’s table if you do not know all the guests’ allergies. Choose seeds instead, and label them as well. For a kindergarten or school it is simplest to avoid nuts completely.

8. Little sandwiches
Sandwiches remain convenient when you need food that can be quickly divided. Choose fresh bread, boiled chicken, a mild cheese and cucumbers. Use moulds sparingly: flowers or stars help match the theme, but every extra detail adds work.
Cut the sandwiches as close to the start of the party as possible, drain the vegetables so the bread does not go soggy. Keep meat and vegetarian ones on separate plates.
How to put together the menu
| Role on the table | Which idea to choose | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Filling base | Mini pizzas, pancakes, macaroni or sandwiches | In advance, reheat before serving |
| Snacks | Themed containers, vegetable sticks | Cut an hour before |
| Sweet accent | Cupcakes, fruit bites | The day before |
| Drinks | Water, smoothie | Mix in the morning, pour when serving |
You do not need all eight ideas. One filling base, two snacks, a sweet treat and drinks are enough for ten children, and there are fewer leftovers.
How much you need for ten children
The amount of food is easiest to work out from the duration. For a two-hour afternoon party children eat less than it seems: most of the time they play. As a practical guide per child, plan 3–4 small portions of a filling dish (mini pizzas, sandwiches), a handful of snacks, one cupcake or a slice of cake and 2–3 cups of drink.
You usually need more tableware than guests. Children put a cup down, go and play, and come back for a new one. For ten children it is worth having:
- Plates: two packs of 6 for snacks and one more for the cake.
- Cups: three packs of 6, because they disappear most often. Write each name on a cup with a marker.
- Napkins: 20–30 pieces, especially if there will be sauces or chocolate.
- Straws: at least two for each child.
If the party lasts longer than three hours or takes place around lunchtime, double the portions of the filling dish and keep the desserts the same.
Discuss allergies with the parents before buying products, and label the dishes with cards. Keep cold dishes in the fridge until serving.
Serving keeps order just as much as the menu does. Cups, plates, napkins and straws in one theme create a unified look even when the food is simple. For example, for a dinosaur party plates, cups and napkins “Dinosaurs” are suitable. You will find all table accessories in the table decoration category, and themes by the child’s interests in the children’s birthdays section.
