Kids' Birthday Invitation: 8 Ideas with Sample Texts

The theme is already chosen – unicorns, dinosaurs, pirates or space – and now you need to invite the guests. A good children’s birthday invitation first of all clearly states the date, time, place and whom to reply to. If there is room left, it can hint at the dress code or even hide the first task of the celebration. Below are eight formats with text examples. You only need to change the names, dates and address.

1. Digital invitation by message

The most convenient option when you invite guests via Messenger, SMS or a parents’ group. On the phone the child’s name, the date and whom to reply to must be visible first. Decorations must not overshadow the information.

“Ula is inviting you to a unicorn birthday party! We will be waiting for you on 18 May at 2 p.m., Green Street 8. To let us know if you are coming, message Dad Tomas by 10 May. If you like, dress up in rainbow colours.”

The advantage is that if the venue or time changes, the information is easy to update. The disadvantage is that the child sees the invitation only on the parents’ phone, so the emotion is weaker than when handing over a card. Send it 2–3 weeks ahead, and a reminder one week before.

2. Printed themed card

A paper card suits when the child wants to invite friends personally at kindergarten or school. When handing it over, the child tells the others about the party theme, and the anticipation starts straight away.

“The dinosaur expedition begins! Matas invites you to his birthday on 9 June at 1 p.m. Pass the reply to mum Ruta by 30 May. Dress comfortably – big adventures await!”

Choose sturdier paper, because thin paper gets crumpled in a backpack. Before printing, check the names, date and contacts – correcting after printing is always more expensive. Coordinate the colours with the upcoming balloons and the table: for dinosaurs green and brown, for mermaids turquoise and violet.

3. Invitation with a dress code

A dress code helps guests understand the theme and creates a unified look in photos. Only write it as a suggestion, not as a requirement, and add that what is already at home will also do.

“The party theme is fairies and forest magic. If you like, dress up with wings, a crown or a green detail. What you already have in your wardrobe will also be fine.”

Three dress-code levels

  • Simple: one theme colour in the clothes.
  • Themed accent: a mask, a hat, wings or glasses.
  • Full look: a costume and a matching accessory.

For parents who want the full look, you can suggest browsing carnival costumes for children’s birthday parties. Send the invitation early enough for parents to decide and get the parcel.

4. Invitation with a small accessory

The invitation can become a small parcel. Attach a light themed accent to the card: a paper crown, an eye mask or a birthday party hat. The child hands over such an invitation in person, and the item becomes the first detail of the celebration.

“Your ticket to a pirate adventure! Come on 12 October at 3 p.m. to Forest Street 4. You will find an eye mask with the invitation – put it on at the party. To let us know if you are coming, message mum Lina by 5 October.”

For a pirate party a pirate set with a sword and eye patch will do, for princesses a small ribbon, for animal parties puppy ears. The accessory must be light and safe, with no small parts for the youngest children.

This format suits a small group of friends. When there are many invitations, choose one simple, identical detail.

5. Invitation and parents’ group

For a larger group or several families, it is convenient to add a shared messaging group to the invitation. In it the parents can clarify the dress code, the address, whether the celebration will be outdoors, and what to bring if it rains. Send the group link only after you have received the reply, so that the information does not get lost.

“We invite you to a space mission! The celebration takes place on 24 August at 12 p.m. in our yard. The dress code is space colours or one astronaut or planet accent. Please let us know about your attendance by 15 August.”

Write in the group in advance that the outfit is optional. Otherwise some parents will feel pressured to buy.

6. Treasure hunt invitation

The invitation can become the first birthday task. The guest receives several cards or hints and, after solving them, learns the date, the venue and the theme. For a pirate birthday a map with a missing piece will suit, for dinosaurs a trail of footprints that leads to the date.

  • First card: “Find three blue symbols.”
  • Second: “Arrange them from smallest to largest.”
  • Third: “The number you get is the day of the celebration.”
  • Fourth: “Open the map and find the venue.”

Games aside, still write the date, time and address to the parents separately and clearly, so that nobody arrives on the wrong day. You will find more pirate party ideas in our pirate birthday guide.

7. Invitation on a balloon

A fun idea for the little ones: write the invitation text with a marker on an inflated balloon, then let the air out and put it in an envelope with the note “Blow me up!”. The child inflates it (or asks dad) and reads the invitation.

Light single-colour balloons work best for this, on which black marker clearly shows, for example white or light yellow ones. Write briefly: name, date, time, venue. Everything else goes on a separate card in the envelope. An uninflated balloon is not a toy for a small child, so for children under 8 address such an envelope to the parents: let an adult inflate the balloon.

Balloons of the same colours can greet guests at the door on the day of the celebration. You will find all the colours in our balloons category.

8. Invitation with a gift wish

When a family wants to avoid unnecessary presents, the invitation can gently point the way. It should not be a list of requirements.

“The most important gift is your good mood. If you still want to bring something, Jonas currently loves dinosaurs and books.”

It is better not to write specific products and prices in the invitation – the invitation first of all invites to the celebration, rather than telling people what to buy. If several guests want to chip in together, it is more convenient to agree on that in the parents’ group.

What must be written in the invitation

Whatever format you choose, the invitation must contain the child’s name, the occasion and age, the date, the start and end times, the exact address and whom to reply to by which day. If the celebration is not at home, add entry information. Write whether special clothing is needed and whether the celebration will take place outdoors.

Format When to send Suitable for
Digital 2–3 weeks before When time is short, large group
Printed card 3–4 weeks before When the child wants to hand it over personally
With an accessory 2–3 weeks before Small group of friends
Treasure hunt 2–3 weeks before Older than 5 years
On a balloon 2 weeks before Little ones, close friends

Once the invitations are sent, you can prepare the celebration itself. You will find balloons, party tableware and decorations for the chosen theme in the children’s birthday section, for example for unicorn or dinosaur themes.
